Arsenic is a kind of poisonous chemical. It is a white compound. Generally, all kinds of water contain arsenic. It is found in drinking water as a mineral part. Underground water is the main source of the toxic element called arsenic. Some tube-well water contain arsenic in a high amount. Surface water is almost free from arsenic. Human body needs arsenic to certain amount but when it exceeds the limit it is called arsenic pollution. Arsenic causes a serious disease names arsenicosis in human body. The affected people suffer form skin diseases. The victim's palm, left and back become sore. Long term suffering can cause skin cancer. Arsenic pollution is a vital public health problem in Bangladesh. In some areas of Bangladesh tube-well water contains high amount of arsenic than the tolerable limit. People drinking water from these arsenic contaminated tube-wells easily become the victim of arsenicosis. Arsenicosis is not a contagious disease. Eating lot of vegetables, fish etc and taking vitamin A, C and E can be primarily effective for arsenicosis. However, The treatment of arsenicosis is very expensive. Therefore, we need to take some preventive measures. If we stop drinking arsenic polluted water, we can remain safe, Rainwater and other ground water should be collected and purified for using. The government should test the tube-wells in the affected areas and mark the unusable ones. They should mark the affected tube-wells with red signs and those that are safe with green sings. The government should take other steps to ensure pure drinking water for the people of arsenic prone zones.
