Birth and parentage : Rabindranath Tagore was born on the 6th of May. 1861, in the celebrated Tagore group of Jorasanko in Calcutta: His dad Debendranath Tagore, was held in high regard for his virtuous life.
Early life and education : Rabindranath's early years were spent in the care of simple domestics and for a rich man's son, in comparative neglect. He was sent to school at the usual age but he felt out of his element within the four walls of the school and often played truant. His brother, Jyotirindranath, recognized his genius and made arrangements at home for his proper education. So however he had no ordinary tutoring, he had liberal instruction of a high request. A few years later he was sent to England. He spent a few months with prof. Henry Morley at the University of London concentrating English writing and afterward unexpectedly got back.
Literary activities : It is impossible even to give a brief summary of Rabindranath's literary works and activities. Even when he was a mere boy he composed, besides many fragments and pieces as many as six books of poems and lyrical dramas. He gave particular indications of the innovation of his virtuoso in his Sandhya Sangit. There after his lyrical genius found effusion in such excellent works as Probhai Sangii, Chhabi-O-Can. Kari-O-Komal, Manashi, Sonar Tari Chitra etc. His lyrics sounded a new note and raised the tone of Bengali poetry. His other well-known poetical works are Chaitali, Kanika, Katha-O-Kahini, Kalpana, Naibedija, Shaaran, Shishu, Utsarga, Kheya, Gitanjali, etc. He chose a decent number of melodies and sonnets from Gitanjali and some different works and made an interpretation of them into English. In 1913 he was awarded Nobel Prize for the translated version of this collection entitled Gitanjalior, 'Song Offerings'. Notable among Tagore's later books of poems are Balaka, Shishu Bholanth, Purabi, Parisnesh. Shesh Saptak, Shyamali, Praniik, Nabajatak, Janmadine, Arogya, Shesh Lekha, etc.
A versatile genius : Rabindranath was a versatile genius. He wrote poems, novels, short stories, dramas, essays and other forms of writings and excelled equally in all. His books have realized an adjustment in Bengali writing. Chokher Bali is the first psychological novel in it. Gora expresses forcefully the spirit of national struggle for freedom, which swept this sub-continent at that time. His other novels are Naukadubi, Ghare Baire, Shesher Kabiia, Jogajog, Chaiuranga etc. He also wrote a number of dramas which include Chira Kumar Shabha, Rakta Karabi, Raia-Ci-Rani, Bisarjan and others. His short stories are many. They are all noted for their exquisite beauty. His different papers and letters are on the whole renowned for their abstract characteristics.
A great patriot and cosmopolitan : Rabindranath was a great patriot. However, he abhorred limited patriotism and built up a cosmopolitan soul. He voyaged generally and visited all the significant focuses of the world. To give solid shape to his fantasies and beliefs and to prepare up more youthful age in the cosmopolitan soul, he established the University of Viswabharati at Bolepore.
Conclusion : From the, poet of Bengal Rabindranath gradually rose to be the poet of the world. He was indeed the voice of this sub-continent. full of glory and honours. Rabindranath died on the seventh of August, 1941, at his Calcutta habitation.
