" MY FAVORITE POET " or,
" KAZI NAZRUL ISLAM "
Introduction : Nazrul Islam is the poet whom I like and admire most. His poems and different works have the best intrigue to me. They inspire me with hope and courage. I discover my emotions communicated in his sonnets and different works. This is why Nazrul Islam is my favorite poet.
Early life and restless spirit : Nazrul Islam was born in 1306 B.S. at Churulia, in the district of Burdwan, in a small village. From his very boyhood he showed great courage and fearlessness which were to mark his writings later. His restless spirit did not allow him to stay long at a particular place. He could not confine himself to the routine of the class-room. So he was found roaming about from place to place and drawing inspiration from all that were true and beautiful around him. In his young age he was found at school at one time, with music party at another time, and later on in the war front fighting as a soldier on the Allies during the primary World War.
Literary career : On his return from the battle field, Nazrul exchanged the sword for the pen. He soon proved that his pen was mightier than the sword. Those were the days of the independence Movement. The struggle for freedom from the foreign shackles was in full swing. Nazrul took up his pen and began blowing up fire for the English rulers through his writings. The sorrow and suffering of the subjugated nation turned him into a rebel poet. He felt the pangs of slavery and subjugation so deeply that through his famous poem 'Bidrohi' he expressed the feelings of the mute millions of this sub-continent. This single poem was enough to make the poet immortal.
Champion of the cause of the poor, the weak and the oppressed : Nazrul championed the cause of the poor, the weak, the oppressed and the downtrodden. All his poems show his great love and sympathy for them. He fought with all his power against oppression, tyranny, superstitions conservatism and injustice, He stands out as a revolutionary and his works like 'Agnibeena', 'Sarbahara', 'Bisher Bashi', and 'Sam yabadi', are full of revolutionary zeal and fervor. He made a clarion call to his countrymen to shatter the chains of slavery for which he was thrown into prison.
Characteristics of his poems and writings : Nazrul made a fine blending of words from different languages and cultures in hi writings more successfully than any other poet. He drew his ideas and expressions from the literatures and cultures of many races and sang their songs quite naturally and interestingly. This makes his poems and songs appealing to the people of all races, castes and creeds. It is for all these reasons that Nazrul is so dear and favorite to me.
Conclusion : Nazrul is no longer with us but his poems and other writings will please and inspire us for all times.
